Meet Double Bass Instructor Dr. Joel Schnackel

Dr. Joel Schnackel resides and teaches his bass studio in Hamilton, MT. He currently serves as professor of double bass at the University of Montana. Joel has registered Suzuki training with Virginia Dixon with Every Child Can!, books 1 and book 2 Suzuki bass school. His teaching technique combines the influences of George Vance and the Suzuki Method. Joel has also completed at the University of Memphis level 1 Orff Schulwerk.
Joel is principal bassist with the Missoula Symphony, String Orchestra of the Rockies, and the Bitterroot Valley's Regal Ensemble. In addition, he performs as bassist in Helena, Great Falls, Glacier, Billings, and Bozeman symphonies.
Joel holds a PhD in historical musicology from the University of Memphis, an M.M. degree in double bass performance from the University of Memphis, and B.A. degree in music composition and technology from the University of Montana. He is co-author of The Musical Experience textbook.
